It’s possible. If your neighbor has a German cockroach problem, the pests could be living in the shared wall between apartments and may crawl through cracks and gaps right into your home.
Thankfully, there are ways to protect your space from invading roaches, which not only are gross but can make you sick.
The experts at Pest HQ suggest the following:
Clean Up – Don’t leave dirty dishes, garbage and clutter sitting out, and fix leaking faucets. This makes your unit less attractive to cockroaches by eliminating their sources of food, water and shelter.
Make a Preventive Application – Apply natural Diatomaceous Earth (DE) or exterminator dust into the gaps where pipes enter shared walls, like under sinks, as well as to other cracks and holes. This will kill roaches that try to enter your apartment.
Seal Cracks and Gaps – For added protection, seal up all possible entry points using copper mesh, caulk and door sweeps so roaches have no direct way to enter.
Monitor for Activity – Put cockroach glue traps, or monitors under sinks. If you find roaches in a trap, immediately contact the property manager or take action to get rid of the roaches yourself. Pest HQ sells a money-saving bundle of the most effective cockroach control products.
Prevent Hitchhikers – Cockroaches can be transported in personal belongings. Ask visitors to stow purses and backpacks in a rubber tote by the front door. Inspect items coming into your home, especially used furniture and cardboard boxes kept in common storage areas.
