How can we take back our yard?
It’s beautiful weather for eating outdoors. But as soon as you get settled, the wasps arrive. They attack your plate and dive bomb your beverage. It’s not fun at all, especially for people allergic to wasp stings.
While five types of wasps are common in Canadian yards, the yellowjacket is most problematic when dining outdoors. Sporting yellow and black markings, the aggressive scavengers will steal meat right off your plate. These wasps can arrive in large numbers -- nests may contain up to 5,000 workers – and are most noticeable in late summer, when their population peaks.
Bees, while also yellow and black, do not engage in such behaviour. They also have fuzzy bodies compared to the smooth bodies of wasps.
How do I get rid of yellowjackets in my yard?
The experts at Pest HQ suggest the following DIY tips:
- Carefully locate the nest and make a plan to eliminate Yellowjackets like to nest between walls, in the ground near tree stumps and fence posts, in hollow patio furniture legs, and tree hollows.
- Taking all precautions, spray the nest with aerosol wasp and hornet killer spray. Multiple applications may be necessary. To reach a nest up high, use a long pole fitted with an aerosol can holder.
- If you can’t locate the nest, trap the wasps using a non-toxic hornet and wasp bag trap to lure them to their death.
- Make your yard less attractive to wasps with simple upkeep.
