Moths cause considerable damage to stored food products and to clothes and furnishings. One of the most effective ways to eliminate these indoor pests is by using moth pheromone traps.
How do moth pheromone traps work?
Moth pheromone traps work in two ways. First, they attract male moths with pheromones, or the chemical scent, of the opposite sex. Second, the male moths lured to the trap hoping to breed with female moths get stuck in the trap’s sticky adhesive and die.
This ends the moth breeding cycle. Female moths do not mate and lay eggs, which means hungry moth larva do not hatch and do not eat your food or clothing.
How do I use a pheromone trap for moths?
The first step is to identify the moth. Different moth species have different pheromones, so you should choose a trap designed for the moth causing your problem. To control an indoor moth problem, you’ll typically want a clothes moth trap or a panty moth trap.
Depending on the size of the infested area, you may need to install more than one pheromone trap. Read the product label to learn how many traps per square foot are required and whether you should hang them or lie them flat on a surface. Conduct an inspection, which guides where to place the traps: in a closet, cupboard, garage where bird seed is stored, under a sofa that sits on a wool rug, near taxidermy animals or artwork containing wool fiber.
How long do moth pheromone lures and traps last?
Moth pheromone lures generally remain active for 2 to 3 months.
Will moth traps alone solve my moth problem?
Pheromone traps for clothes moths and panty moths are highly effective at capturing adult moths. Flying insect light traps also capture adult moths. However, any moth eggs already laid will still hatch into larvae that contaminate food or destroy clothing. So, in addition to using pheromone lures and light traps, you will need to take steps to physically eliminate and exclude moths from your home or business.
