Why do spiders freak us out? And how do we make them go away?
If we were making a Halloween horror movie, spiders would play a starring role. Why? They scare people. A lot.
Arachnophobia, an irrational fear of spiders, afflicts up to 15% of the population, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors don’t know exactly why people intensely fear spiders. It could be linked to a traumatic past experience with spiders, or anxieties shared by a parent stricken with the phobia.
For most of us, spiders cause the occasional heebie-jeebies. It’s that horrified feeling you get after walking through a web or when a spider drops down from the car visor onto your lap while driving.
The 8-legged creatures get a bad rap. They’re merely hunting and eating bugs that live in and around your property.
Still, their excessive cobwebs, egg sacs and poop can make porches, docks and basements really unpleasant and spooky places, especially this time of year.
In fall, spiders in Canada have grown to adult size so they’re more noticeable. And some species are moving indoors for warmth.
Should you kill spiders? That depends on a number of factors. Pest HQ shares how to deter them:
- Get rid of the insects that attract them. Spiders follow their prey. If they have nothing to eat, they’ll go elsewhere.
- Use a telescoping duster or HEPA vacuum to physically remove spiders, webs and egg sacs and eliminate potential nesting sites. Fewer eggs result in fewer spiders.
- Employ the best control products in Canada to eliminate and repel spiders. Pest HQ has traps, sprays and dusts available for pick up and fast shipping.
