An ant colony invading a home

Pest HQ sells professional pest control products in Canada to the DIY or do-it-yourself market. But some products work better on specific ant species, so be sure to identify the ants causing the problem in your home, business or outside environment before choosing one.

What are the best ant killers for my ant problem?

Insect Spray such as Knock Down™ Pro -153 RTU Multi-Site 3.78L – An excellent spray for use both indoors and out.  This formulation not only covers ants, but also cockroaches, sowbugs, silverfish, firebrats, spiders, crickets, rice weevils, red flower beetles, carpet beetles, cloth moths, fleas and brown dog ticks, house flies, bedbugs and earwigs.

Diatomaceous Earth – Often called DE ant powder or DE ant dust, this natural desiccant kills ants by drying them out. It is applied to areas where ants are active. The ants walk through the DE, which scratches the waxy outer layer of their exoskeleton. This causes the ant to dry out and die. It will not kill the ant colony but will reduce the number of foraging ants. Learn more about DE and how to apply it.

Ant traps – Ant traps are filled with an insecticide bait. Foraging ants take bait back to the colony where it is shared among ant workers, larvae (baby ants) and the queen. Ant traps (also called ant bait stations) are one of the most effective ways to kill an ant colony, which may contain tens of thousands of ants and have multiple queens and nests. Pesticides in Canada are regulated by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency. The label is the law.

Can I use a home remedy to control ants?

The internet offers many home remedies to kill ants, such as by using vinegar, hot pepper or Borax and sugar. We can't speak to the effectiveness of these home remedies. However, we are confident in the effectiveness of ant control products sold on Pest HQ
