How long do bed bugs live?
Unfortunately, bed bugs can live a long time. According to experts, the nocturnal pests can survive up to 316 days when they have access to a blood meal… or when they’re feeding on you, your family members or pets.
After feeding, female bed bugs that have mated can lay up to 5 eggs a day and 500 eggs in a lifetime, so a few bugs can quickly grow into a major infestation and even faster in hot, humid weather.
As well, bed bugs can survive many months without feeding and near freezing temperatures. They can hide out in an empty cottage or guest room, just waiting for an unsuspecting host to arrive.
To get rid of bed bugs sooner rather than later, practice DIY strategies from Pest HQ:
Evaluate. Have you traveled or bought second-hand furniture recently? Do you use lockers at work, school or the gym? Do you ride public transit? Be aware: Some activities increase your risk of bed bugs.
Inspect. Know the signs of bed bug activity. Then inspect luggage, used furniture, mattresses, purses and backpacks. If you suspect bed bugs in sleeping and lounging areas, install monitors (learn how) and check weekly.
Act. After you’ve identified bed bugs, perform a thorough treatment using nature-based products. Pest HQ sells a discounted product bundle, and its experts have 100+ years of pest control experience to help you eliminate the pests.
Verify. Continue to monitor for two months after treatment to make sure the bed bugs are gone for good. Also, take steps to prevent future infestations.
