Why is my home is crawling with stinkbugs?
On a warm, sunny day in spring, you may be shocked to find the inside of your home swarming with stink bugs.
Don’t fret! Although they look intimidating and emit a foul odor when squished, these pests do not harm or bite humans.
Where did the stink bugs come from?
Stink bugs live outdoors. In the fall, they look for a warm place to overwinter. As such, they hunker down in the cracks and crevices of homes and find their way into walls and attics. On warm spring days the bugs awaken and become active, but sometimes they accidently find their way further into a home than out of it. That’s how they end up in your living space.
The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive agricultural pest that was first documented in Canada in 2010. It’s not uncommon for thousands of these bugs to overwinter in a home and to find their way indoors in spring.
How do I make stink bugs go away?
The quickest way to get rid of stink bugs is to physically remove them using a HEPA vacuum. This is a key element of natural pest control, a process that also involves:
- identifying the insect and reporting invasive species
- inspecting the house exterior and sealing up gaps and cracks to prevent future intrusions
- monitoring stink bug activity with glue boards
- applying natural insect repellents and botanical insecticide
