It may be attic critters.
Here’s what to do.
If you hear a strange noise at night, pay attention. It may not be your imagination.
Consider what happened to an affluent homeowner we heard about: She believed claims of strange noises at night were just her “kids being kids” until a large family of angry raccoons fell through the garage ceiling, damaging two very expensive cars. Yikes.
In fall, animals are looking for warm, cozy dens to escape the winter cold. They’ll hunker in your attic if they can find a way in.
If you’re hearing thuds, scampering or scratching from above, follow this advice from the experts at Pest HQ:
- Identify the animals causing the problem: roof rats, house mice, squirrels, raccoons, something else? Get a visual using a high-powered flashlight or trail camera.
- Set traps. Use snap traps, glue traps, or no-kill traps for rats and mice. Use live traps for wildlife. (Pest HQ sells bundles of the best rat and mice control products and provides tips to get rid of them.)
- Bait traps with professional-grade attractant and check traps daily. Be aware of municipal regulations for trapping and releasing wildlife so you don’t get fined.
- Seal up entry points. Inspect for holes and gaps in the soffits and roofline where the animals are getting inside. Then seal these up using exclusion materials specifically designed for this purpose. Be thorough, as there may be more than one hole that needs fixing.
