Mice and rats can be difficult to catch. That’s why using the right bait is so important.
Bait is something rodents want to eat. It lures them into a snap trap, multiple-catch trap or live trap.
The experts at Pest HQ offer tips for choosing the best bait for rodent traps:
What are rodents eating your area? Windfall fruit? Bird seed? Old pizza from the dumpster? Your choice of bait should be equal to or yummier than what is available.
A good bait is not easy for the rodent to remove from the trap. A small smear of peanut butter can be highly effective. Or use super glue to affix seeds or strong-smelling cat treats to trap catches.
Professional pest control operators use food-based gels for bait. Provoke Professional Mouse Attractant and Provoke Professional Rat Attractant are specifically formulated to attract rodents and they are convenient to use.
Set traps along hard edges where rodents travel. Place multiple traps along walls, ductwork, cabinets, foundations and other edges where you see signs of rodent activity.
Rats are very cautious of new things that appear in their environment. To get them comfortable with traps, bait but don’t set them. Only set the traps once the rats start taking the bait.
Use rodenticide for a large indoor mouse problem. Rodenticide is a bait that contains pesticide. It is packaged in small blocks for use in locked rodent bait stations. The law requires that you follow the label directions.
Use rodenticide only after trying non-toxic bait and taking steps to make your home less attractive to mice.
